But while many men have tried buying Viagra online, a new survey from the International Society of Sexual Medicine found that men who bought it for less than the cost could find it easier to pay for their prescriptions, and the effects were also much bigger than in the US.
In the survey, men in Australia who bought Viagra online in August 2022 for less than a buck a pill, had a total of 11,743 unique users – the highest of any country. The same was true for men in the UK, where the figure was 11,743.
The survey found that of those who bought Viagra online, 11,743 were more likely to seek help for their erectile dysfunction (ED), compared with 10,738 men who bought generic sildenafil.
Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra, which was approved in the US by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping men get and keep an erection.
Dr Mark Hoey, a sexual health specialist at the University of Sydney, said: “Erectile dysfunction is a common problem that can be embarrassing and can be associated with stress, anxiety and relationship problems.
“However, we know that for many men, getting an erection is much easier than getting a hard one. That’s partly due to the way Viagra is taken. It’s taken as an injection into the penis and it’s taken about 30 minutes before sexual activity.
“There are some men who may not be able to get or sustain an erection if they take Viagra-only tablets, so it’s important men feel they are getting an erection when they take them.”
The survey also found that those who bought Viagra online did more to keep their erection strong, with an estimated 15 per cent of men reporting feeling that it was easier to get or sustain an erection in the first place.
But Dr Hoey added: “It’s important men feel they have an erection when they take them and they’re ready to do so. The higher the dose, the more confident they are about getting it.”
He added: “If you’re unsure how to take your Viagra, talk to your GP or pharmacist first, or get some advice from your doctor.
“If you have concerns about your erectile dysfunction, you can speak to your GP or a pharmacist who can provide guidance on how to proceed and ensure you’re taking the right dose to help maintain an erection.”

Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.

“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”
